I have a frig problem, can anyone advise?

My HotPoint refrig is 5 years old. I just noticed that there sounded like running water in the back but I did not see any (when the auto defrost was on). I unplugged it and then replugged. The auto defrost is now off but I am afraid it will return,. Does anyone know what this might be?
