Which hurricane do you think was worst to strike North Carolina Fran(1996) or Floyd(1999)?
In some ways, the answer to your question is not one of barometric pressures and windspeeds, but one of personal experience such as damages and loss of life. I was in Hurricane Andrew on 08/24/92, but survived. Yet four South Floridians died as a result of Katrina when it came ashore as a catagory one. For their families, Katrina was worst than Andrew. Any anwer to the question of one hurricane being worst than another is a question of semantics. A CNN meteorologist said that the difference between a CAT 4 and a CAT 5 hurricane is the difference between being hit by a car (CAT 4) and being hit by a truck (CAT 5). Both'll kill you.
